Arabic script

Session objectives

In this session you will learn how to recognise some Arabic letters.

  • You will see the letters joined together in a word.
  • You will then see the individual letters that make up that word.
  • Finally you will practise writing the letters and the words.

Allocated time: 60 minutes (2 x 30 minutes)

Look at the image and listen. Look carefully at the Arabic word, the transliteration and the translation. 

 

بنت

bint (girl)

Now look at the individual Arabic letters. Remember that Arabic letters go from right to left. Try to write the letters on a piece of paper. Always write anti-clockwise from right to left.

ب ن ت

 t < n < b

Look at this image and listen. Look carefully at the Arabic word, the transliteration and the translation. 

 

ابن

ibn (son)

Now look at the individual Arabic letters. Remember that Arabic letters go from right to left. Try to write the letters on a piece of paper. Always write anti-clockwise from right to left.

ا ب ن

 n < b < i

Look at the image and listen. Look carefully at the Arabic word, the transliteration and the translation. 

 

جد

jadd (grandfather)

Now look at the individual Arabic letters. Remember that Arabic letters go from right to left. Try to write the letters on a piece of paper. Always write anti-clockwise from right to left.

ج د

 d < j

Now practise writing the three words in Arabic.

Download and print out the worksheet. Look a each Arabic word on the worksheet. Trace the Arabic word. Finally, try to write the Arabic word on the lines.
