Angawi House in Jeddah: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Also in Jeddah is the Angawi house. This was designed by Dr Sami Angawi and has become a living museum. It is the result of 40 years of work and a lifetime of studying architecture around the world.

Captivating Design

The Angawi House showcases the fusion of Hejazi and Islamic architectural styles. The house itself features intricately carved wooden screens, which are known as “mashrabiya”. The screens not only enhance privacy, but they also allow the interplay of light and shadows. This creates a mesmerising ambience within. The use of coral stones, a popular traditional building material in Jeddah, adds a distinct charm to the structure. Additionally, the incorporation of geometric patterns and decorative motifs throughout the house showcases the mastery of Islamic craftsmanship.

Preserving Tradition

The architect of Angawi House spent many years researching traditional architectural techniques and materials to ensure that the house maintains an authentic feel. By reviving ancient building practices and showcasing them in a modern context, the Angawi House inspires a renewed appreciation for traditional Saudi architecture.

A Cultural Haven

Beyond its architectural splendour, the Angawi House serves as a cultural haven. It has become a centre for artistic and intellectual gatherings, hosting exhibitions, lectures, and performances that celebrate Saudi Arabian arts and heritage.
