Tips about eating, drinking and hygiene

When traveling to southern or some Arab countries, one should remember a few things about eating, drinking and hygiene. Disregarding such warnings or tips can turn a pleasant journey into  a nightmare. But if you take these hints seriously, you can easily protect yourself.

1) When drinking always make sure that the drinks come from original sealed bottles. Wells are to be found in many Arab cities and villages, but one should not drink from them. Many households have two faucets, one of which is tap water. Furthermore, you should refrain from having  ice cubes in your drink (outside the hotel), as ice can  preserve germs.

2) If you like  freshly squeezed juices, you should always make sure that everything that comes into contact with the freshly squeezed juice is clean.

3) If you buy fruits and vegetables from the market, always make sure  you wash it again at the hotel or in the accommodation, or even better peel it. In some countries it makes also sense to refrain from eating raw salads.

4) Furthermore, one should avoid  mayonnaise, creamy sweets, ice cream, etc., because bacteria easily settle here. Rather go for pre-packaged goods during the holidays.

5) Avoid raw fish and raw meat,  as these can be a source of germs entering the body. You can eat cooked or fried fish and cooked meat.

If one has been infected with germs due to  eating and drinking unsafe food or drinks, spices won’t be of much help. and you might have to see a doctor.

In many cases you could avoid seeing a doctor if you stick to the above mentioned rules.
Despite taking caution with food and drinks, there is no reason why one shouldn’t try and enjoy the local cuisine.
