An earthly Paradise

Muslim Spain (711-1492 AD) became the Arab poets’ ideal of an earthly Paradise. The abundance of water together with the skills of the Muslim water engineers and agriculturalists led to the flowering of a rich literary culture, celebrating the wonders of nature.

You can see the results when you visit Granada in Andalusia, Spain. Its Generalife gardens, created at the beginning of the 14th century AD, are still one of the wonders of the world.

Set against the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the fortified palace started life as a walled citadel before it became the seat of Granada’s Nasrid emirs. Their 14th-century Palacios Nazaríes are among the finest Islamic buildings in Europe and, together with the Generalife gardens, they are now a World Heritage Site.
